ECONOMY OF  TANZANIA

Tanzania is one of 10 fastest growing economies in Africa. For the past 10 years, the country’s economy grew at an average of 7 percent. The IMF projects a GDP growth for Tanzania of +5.1%  in 2022, and 6.0% in 2026. The WB, in its 17th Tanzania Economic Update (TEU), estimates a real GDP growth rate of 4.5–5.5% in 2022 and 6% over the medium term as exports and domestic demand recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

In July 2020, Tanzania was officially promoted to a lower-middle-income country by the World Bank. These achievements can be attributed to political and economic stability, good and predictable policies as well as peace and tranquility.

Investment climate

The United Republic of Tanzania has sustained 6-7 percent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth since the late 1990s due to a relatively stable political environment, reasonable macro-economic policies, structural reforms, resiliency from external shocks, and debt relief. In November 2020, President Magufuli announced that in the next five years its government will put great emphasis on key economic sectors, especially agriculture, livestock, fisheries, industry, mining, trade, and tourism.

Furthermore opportunities lie in infrastructure and due to the discovery of large gas fields there are also opportunities in the  energy sector. Especially Tanzania’s rapidly expanding tourism sector continues to be a source of great economic promise. The Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, serves as a major tourist attraction, as does the country’s network of national parks, reserves, and conservation areas, which together span some one-fourth of the country. Tanzania’s beaches and coral reefs are also attractive to tourists.

Challenges the Tanzanian investment climate has to overcome is that it remains difficult doing business in Tanzania despite good (growth) prospects. This is mainly due to arbitrary claims of the Tanzanian Tax Authority, coupled with heavy fines. There is no “equal level-playing-field”. Foreign and visible companies seem to be particularly targeted by the authorities.

Despite these challenges compared to its many neighbouring countries Tanzania remains a politically stable and peaceful country, as well as a regional leader, including in the East African Community (EAC).
